All resources in the Learning Commons are available to checkout although some types of materials must remain in the Learning Commons and cannot be taken home. These exceptions check out for up to 2 hours but are renewable. They include: reference books, headsets, webcams, DVD players, and all items in the Tutoring Center. All other materials may be checked out and taken home according to the following guidelines:

  • Laptops & Chromebooks       duration – semester                                   limit – one
  • Books                                     duration – 2 weeks (renewable)                limit – twenty

There are no quantity limits for faculty and staff. Books checkout for the semester, DVDs checkout for one week, audioCDs checkout for two weeks.

Faculty and staff are also able to checkout equipment. Laptops are available for immediate on-campus us. If off-campus use is needed, a state property control form is required and can be found on the Learning Commons web page.

Holds

All users may request a hold on items, thereby reserving that item for checkout. Holds can be placed directly by a user in the online catalog which is accessed through the Learning Commons web page or staff can place holds for users.

  • Holds cannot be placed on Reference or Tutoring Center items
  • Holds are satisfied on a first-come basis and cannot be superseded
  • Hold requests are valid for 30 days and then expire
  • Once a Hold is available for pick up, the user has seven days to claim the item
  • Emails and text messages will be sent to the user when holds are available or expired

Fines and Fees

Items that are not returned on time may incur fines for being late; however, there is a one day grace period. Fines apply to student accounts only. If a student's account should accumulate $20 or more in fines, the account will be blocked from any further checkouts until the balance is brought below $20.

The fine for books is .50 per day; the fine for audio-visual items is $1 per day.

Overdue items will be considered Lost-Assumed after a reasonable period of time. Users will then be charged the replacement cost of the item + a processing/administrative fee which will be placed on the student's BPCC financial record.

User Log-ins and Access Policies

The Learning Commons maintains a web page on the BPCC website. Through this portal, users can access the library catalog, electronic resources, research guides, tutorials, reservation tools, and information about the Learning Commons. Users can also access their library accounts to manage holds, renew materials, and view any charges. Access to electronic resources and user accounts requires the user’s ID (LOLA username or L-number) and their PIN (6-digit birthday).

Computers and printers in the Learning Commons can be used by currently enrolled students as well as all faculty and staff. Students can log-in to campus computers using their LOLA username and a self-created password. Learning Commons staff can assist students with resetting and creating passwords. This log-in is also used for campus Wi-Fi and printing. Access to email and all Microsoft Office apps use the student’s BPCC email for log-in with the password being the same as the one used for campus computers.

The mission of the Tutoring Center (TC) is to enhance students’ academic skills by providing high quality instructional support services. The TC strives to assist all learners at all levels in achieving academic success, gaining self-confidence, and becoming independent learners. The TC continues to search for new services and programs to enhance educational support for students while remaining focused on BPCC’s mission.

Tutoring services are available for BPCC, high school, and other local college students for no cost. Tutoring sessions can be booked online on the Learning Commons web page.

Students who use the tutoring service have the responsibility to:

  • Be prepared by bringing all academic support materials to each tutoring session
  • Complete as much of the assignment as possible before coming to the tutoring session
  • Get help early; do not wait until the last minute before seeking help
  • Cell phones should be muted; calls need to be taken outside
  • Follow Learning Commons policies

During busy times, tutors may get a student started, then help someone else, and come back around. If a tutor forgets to return, please give them a courteous reminder.

Tutors Can:

  • Review and help clarify assignments
  • Help students understand concepts that the instructor has already presented in class
  • Provide students with additional examples and practice problems
  • Help students understand their textbook and how to utilize the information

Tutors Cannot:

  • Teach new material missed in class
  • Help with take-home or make-up tests
  • Always give assistance at the computer stations; most tutoring takes place at the tables
  • Guarantee an error-free assignment or a better grade
  • Do a student’s homework

Acceptable Behavior in the Learning Commons

All visitors to the Learning Commons must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Be respectful of other users and staff

According to the Department of Education the following statement applies to the Division of Learning Commons at Bossier Parish Community College:

Students are allowed to use library resources to print information that deals with their student number. For example, letters of appeals are acceptable.

Orientations are meant to inform students of resources, materials, facilities, policies, and research, both general and subject specific. Orientations must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance using the online reservation tool on the Learning Commons’ web page. Orientations are not available during the first and final two weeks of the semester.

Proctoring and Testing Services

Proctoring Services are offered for students who may be in online courses and have logistical issues with testing or who may need to take a make-up exam. Proctoring will take place in the Library Classroom (Building A - Room 149) on the first floor of the library. If you think you need to use the Proctoring Services in the Learning Commons, contact your instructor to begin setting up a session.

The Library Classroom is unable to accommodate exams that are already being proctored by an electronic service such as MonitorEDU, ProctorU, or Proctorio, due to camera requirements. If you are taking an exam using an electronic proctoring service and need to take it on campus, you may reserve a private study room in the Library or Tutoring Center.

For proctoring with the Disability Services Office, contact Angie Cao at acao@bpcc.edu.

For specialized testing services, visit BPCC Testing Center.

At the earliest, requests that are received will be scheduled during the next business day. If your scheduling request is approved, you will be notified by email of the date and time. The seating in the Library Classroom is limited to the number of students it can accommodate at one time, so you may have to reschedule if the classroom is already full.

When you arrive for your proctored session:

  • Bring student or government-issued ID for identification purposes.
  • Do not bring anything in the way of books, notebooks, backpacks, etc.
  • You may not use cellphones or smart watches.
  • Scratch paper will be provided by the proctor, if allowed by your instructor.
  • Have your login information ready to access campus computers and myBPCC/Canvas.
  • Arrive at the beginning of your session; you may not exceed your scheduled time slot.

If you have any questions, please email proctoring@bpcc.edu or call the Tutoring Center at 318-678-6059.
